А чего и сколько надо произвести никто даже спросить не может.

Свободные гипотезы и их валидация — одна из ключевых целей таких мест. Законотворчеством и евангелизацией занимаются на других площадках.

Возможно, они сами не совсем понимают как… У них на бесплатный вариант копилефт лицензия AGPL v3, которая препятствует использованию (модифицированию) облачными провайдерами ("if you modify the core database source code, the goal is that you have to contribute those modifications back to the community."); они продают коммерческие лицензии (подписки) и Enterprise версию и у них есть платные облачные кластера (https://www.mongodb.com/cloud/atlas/pricing)

In my opinion we are breaking new ground and doing something that no-one else is doing. We have a traditional enterprise sales play, where we have an open source core product, but we have proprietary differentiated products around it and when we sell a subscription, the buyer is buying not just support, but they’re also buying access to these proprietary tools. Tools that make using MongoDB easier and safer.
We have this traditional enterprise arm of the business. But the other core strategy that we have in play is a cloud play. Where we have a suite of management technologies as a cloud service, that is geared for people that we are never going to talk to and it’s at a very attractive price point – $39 a server, a month. It allows us to go after this long tail of the market that isn’t Fortune 500 companies, necessarily. So we can do both of those in parallel.

Clever licensing: MongoDB’s database server is licensed under the restrictive AGPL 3 license. AGPL 3 mandates open sourcing of any change to the source code even when offered as a service on the cloud. This prevents MongoDB from being disintermediated by public cloud companies such as Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure which could offer MongoDB as a SaaS product, a fate which MySQL suffered due to its GPL license.
